Dr Lalit Kumar Sharma

Dr Lalit Kumar Sharma obtained his M.Tech (Materials Tech) and Ph.D. degree in Ceramic Engineering from IIT-BHU, Varanasi in 1984 & 1989 subsequently. He did his short term course on managerial skills for Technical Personnel from NITIE, Mumbai. He developed Nitride bonded Silicon Carbide Refractory Products thru Vibro Pressing, Multitampering, Slip Casting and Solid casting techniques for non-ferrous industries, Honey-Comb Cordierite Kiln Furniture for Ceramic Tableware industries, Energy Efficient Ceramic Coatings, Refractory Castables & monolithic, Energy Efficient Kilns development, Low Thermal Mass Refractory Kiln Furniture Designing, Development of Ultra Low Density Refractory Granules, Development of Alumina Heat Sinks for LED Bulbs, Ceramic Cook wares development and establishing common facilities centers in different regions of India for Terracotta Potters. He implemented 5S, ISO-9000, ISO-14000 and Best Safety Practices in manufacturing sector. After serving industry till 2004, he moved to CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute-KC, Khurja as Scientist-in-Charge in 2004. He is presently Chief Scientist and Scientist in Charge. He got a prestigious Project sanctioned from GMKRIT for training in terracotta field for CGCRI-NC, Ahmedabad under his Scientist-in-Charge period in 2019.

Dr Sharma has delivered Technical and Managerial skills lectures in IITs, NITs, Universities (Gulbarga, Meerut, Kanpur, BHU, Indus, Nirma & Thapar), Management Institutes (BIMTech, G.L Bajaj Institute of Management & Business School of Delhi), Govt. Polytechnics (South & North India), Industries (Tata Steel, Tata Chemicals, DCM, Kajaria Ceramics, Bharat Potteries, Clay Craft, Bikaner Mines Association, Orient-Bell, NTPC, PCRA, KVIC, Asian Ceramics & Ceramics Asia Shows & Sun Earth Ceramics). He visited Spain for technology transfer, China (as Leader of UNIDO delegation), Japan for invited lectures in Kurashiki, Yokohama National University and Tokyo Institute of Technology, Thailand for invited talk from Thai Ceramic Society, USA for Invited talk from The Am Ceram Soc (Daytona Beach), NASA (Cleveland), Ohio Aerospace Institute (Cleveland), Argonne National Laboratory (Chicago) and MS&T (Salt Lake City). Dr Sharma is the Former Chairman of White-ware Committee of Bureau of Indian Standards, Former Vice President of Indian Institute of Ceramics, Former Chairman of Global Corporate Achievement Award Committee of The Am Ceram Soc, Former Jt. Secretary and Vice President of the Indian Ceramic Society, Life Member of ICS and AIPMA.

Dr Sharma is the recipient of several prestigious awards: Global Star Award of The Am Ceram Soc, Global Ambassador Award of The Am Ceram Soc, Industrial Service Award of Rotary Club of India, Shubham Shree Award in U.P State, Professor Sasadhar Ray Memorial Award to CGCRI-KC and recently Corporate Environment Achievement Award of The Am.Ceram.Soc for CGCRI-KC forward energy field for 2020 (First Ever Award to India).

Dr Sharma has so many research & technical publications in Scientific & Engineering Journals as well as has published 7 books for Whiteware industries. His team efforts on Energy Saving Aspects for Ceramic Industries were published in the form a Book by PCRA- Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas in 2013. He and his team has established Common Facility Centers for Potters in Khurja, Bareilly, Bijnor and Varanasi in U.P, Garhfuljhar, Surajpur and Narigaon in Chattisgarh, Sasaram in Bihar. One CFC is approved to be established in Agartala-Tripura and Bhadrawati (Maharashtra). He has established following in the CGCRI-KC campus:

Foreseeing the implied needs of society, he did not restrict himself to this level and added the implied dream of functionality into the tiles like Germfree tiles, Antistatic charge tiles, Water repellent tiles, Scratch-free tiles, Anti-stain tiles, TAC tiles, radiation shielding tiles, Cool roof tiles and lot more.

He is having strong knowledge of R&D of porcelain and ceramic tiles and its backward integration for preparation of its critical raw materials like Ceramic glass frits, soluble salts, ceramic stains, inkjet coloursetc which earns huge revenue in terms of import substitution and selling.

During working as the Business Head of Industrial Products & Natural Resources Division business has improved many folds and brand name “Endura” became very popular in industrial ceramic raw material segment.

Presently, he is working as President Operations, Heading Operations of all its Tile manufacturing plants at different locations of H&R Johnson (India).

He has received several prestigious awards: Prof. Sasadhar Ray Memorial Award in the year 2014 for contribution in white ware Industry and Dr Madan Gopal Bhagat Award in the year 2015 for contribution in Ceramics & allied fields. He has been appointed as Research Council Member by Director General CSIR, New Delhi for CSIR-CGCRI. He is associating with different reputed R&D Institutes in country in their Research Advisory board. He is Life time Fellowship of Institute of Ceramics, India.

Dr Himansu Sekhar Tripathi, Senior Principal Scientist and Head, Refractory & Traditional Ceramics Division, CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, graduated from the University of Calcutta in Ceramic Engineering and obtained his M. Tech and Ph. D (Tech) degree in Ceramic Engineering from the same University. He worked for two years as post-doctoral fellow at Boston University, Massachusetts, USA and for 4 months as academic visitor at Imperial College, London.

His research areas of interest include ceramics and refractories including synthesis and processing of high performance synthetic refractory raw materials, refractory processing and characterization in particular magnesia-carbon, mullite, Al2O3-MgO-MgAl2O4, mag-chrome, oxide-non-oxide system, basic ramming mass for induction furnace and value addition to natural raw materials

Dr Tripathi has ~ 25 years research experience in different fields of refractories. He has received many fellowships and awards, like Refractory Technologist Award from Indian Ceramic Society, Raman Research Fellowship from CSIR, Post-doctoral fellowship from Boston University, USA, Malaviya Award, Deokaran Award from the Indian Ceramic Society, etc.  He has published ~55 research papers in SCI journals, more than 35 papers in conference proceedings and has 6 patents in his credit.  He guided two Ph. D candidates and presently guiding 3 candidates for PhD degree.

Dr Tripathi is a fellow of Indian Institute of Ceramics and Life members of many professional bodies like Indian Institute of Metals, Indian Ceramic Society, and Electron Microscope Society of India etc. He is the Vice president of Indian Institute of Ceramics (2019-2020), Secretary, Kolkata Chapter of the Indian Ceramic Society, Member Refractory Sectional Committee, Metallurgical Engineering Division Council and Ceramic ware sectional committee of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Dr Tripathi is the Hony Editor of the ‘Transaction of the Indian Ceramic Society’, Indoceram of AIPMA and reviewers of many reputed international journals.

Dr Sunirmal Jana born on 12th July 1966. He did his M.Sc (Chemistry) from Kalyani University in 1991, Ph.D. (Science) from Jadavpur University in 1998, Bachelor of Education degree (B. Ed.) from Vidyasagar University in 1993 and CSIR organized management course Leadership Development Programme in 2010.

Dr. Jana joined as Junior Scientist in CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute in December, 1997. Presently, he is working at the same Institute as Principal Scientist (CSIR). Dr. Jana is also working as Associate Professor in AcSIR and performing as a course Coordinator and Teacher for the course, “Structural and Functional Coatings”. He is also working as a Guest Teacher for B. Tech. students in Chemical Technology, University of Calcutta, on “Sol-gel materials”. Dr. Jana is performer/performing as PI/Co-PI of various National/International R&D projects especially on functional thin films and nanomaterials.

At present, he has published about 65 research papers (h-index: 14) in SCI/peer reviewed journals, >70 conference papers, 5 Book Chapters and 3 Indian Patents. He already guided 4 Ph.D. students and is also guiding several Ph.D. students. Dr. Jana also supervised 15 M.Tech/M.Sc/B.Tech. students for their projects. He is an elected member of Indian Ceramic Society (InCers) for three successive terms (2015-2016, 2017-2018, 2019-2020) and EC members, InCers, MRSI Kolkata Chapter. Dr. Jana is also a life member of MRSI, InCers, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science and NCE Bengal & Jadavpur University. Dr Jana is a Sr. Member, International Engineering and Technology Institute, Hong Kong. S&T Interests and Initiatives:

His research interests include the science and design of advanced materials, and multi-scale microstructural characterization using techniques such as transmission electron microscopy and 3D atom probe field ion microscopy, as applied to the study of electronic materials and solid-state phase transformations. His research at DMRL and CMU concentrated on the process-structure-property relationships in a variety of materials systems such as alloys based on Ti and its intermetallics Ti3Al and TiAl; specialty steels; Ni base superalloys; high energy rare-earth permanent magnets; and ceramic matrix composites. At DMRL, he was the leader of an activity to advanced steels for naval applications. It was under his able leadership that the electron microscopy facilities at DMRL developed into a world-class facility. At DRDO headquarters he coordinated the activities of materials cluster laboratories of DRDO. He provided advice and insights into materials related activities of DRDO. He joined CSIR at CGCRI as its 8th Director in August 2015 and is currently engaged in shaping the technological frontiers of CGCRI for strategic and societal missions in areas such as Fibres for lasing, sensing amplification, optical and laser glass, missile radomes. He also served as Director of IICB, Kolkata and NML, Jamshedpur. Since Jan 2021, he is CSIR Scientist Emeritus at C-MET, Thrissur R&D efforts in the low temperature SOFC technologies.

Mr Shreekant Somany, son of Late Shri Hira Lall Somany, after doing graduation in Bachelor of Science from Kolkata University, joined the family business in 1969. 

In the year 1981, he moved to Hyderabad to head the Glass Division of Hindustan Sanitaryware & Industries Ltd (a group company) M/s. Associated Glass Industries Ltd (AGI).

In the year 1992, he came back to Delhi to head yet another group company, M/s. SPL LIMITED, now called Somany Ceramics Ltd, one of the well-established and largest manufacturers of glazed ceramic tiles in the country.

In the year 1994 he took charge of this company as its Managing Director, and later on in the year 2005, he became the Chairman & Managing Director. Today, the company has a manufacturing base to produce 19.15 million sqm of ceramic tiles annually across two plant locations in Bahadurgarh (Haryana) near Delhi and Kadi (Gujarat) near Ahmedabad. In addition to own manufacturing Somany Ceramics Ltd also outsources about 10 million sqm of tiles per annum from domestic / international manufacturers. SCL offers the widest range of ceramic tiles in the country and has a strong pan India sales distribution network & also exports its material to various countries the Middle East, East and Central Africa, Europe, Latin America, South Asia and South East Asia. Instrument in Somany Ceramics Ltd becoming the first Indian ceramic tile company to have received PATENT under Indian Patent Act for its revolutionary “High Abrasion Resistant Glaze Composite” known as VC (Veilcraft) Shield. He was personally involved as an inventor in the whole process of this invention. 

He is the recipient of the prestigious Corporate Technical Achievement award from The American Ceramic Society in the field of ceramics for development of Somany Veil Craft Shield Floor Tiles. 

He has been associated with various Federations and Associations, and presently Deputy Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry Northern Region.

On behalf of FICCI and CII, he has lead business delegations to Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Being in the business of adding beauty to living spaces, he has always been artistically inclined - in love with art, design and music. He is a Director of Samagam, an organization established with the objective of strengthening the fields of performing and visual arts. 

Also his hobbies are - passionate with his photography, garden and trekking.

Professor Pramod Kumar Jain is the Director of Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi. Prof. Jain was also the Director of Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Manufacturing, Jabalpur.
Trained as an Industrial Engineer, Professor Jain received his B.E., M.E., and Ph.D. from the University of Roorkee (Now IIT Roorkee). He has a broad background in manufacturing systems and engineering including product design and development. For his outstanding contributions to teaching and research, he has won accolades from several quarters.
Professor Jain is on the panel of several policy making committees of national importance, constituted by DST, AICTE, and Ministry of Education. With his inimitable leadership abilities, he has propelled the institute to perform consistently and improve its NIRF ranking. He has also exemplarily led IIT (BHU) Varanasi to acquire funding for several high value R&D projects. He has been steering the institute towards global rankings by promoting a culture of innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship.

Professor Vinay Kumar Singh is presently Head of the Department & Professor (HAG) Department of Ceramic Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU). He obtained his B.Tech in Ceramic Engineering in the year 1985, M.Tech in Ceramic Engineering in the year 1987 and Ph.D. degree in Ceramic Engineering in the year 1994 from IIT-BHU, Varanasi. He is specially engaged in teaching Ceramic Coating, Industrial Ceramics, Ceramic Whitewares, Phase equilibria and reaction Kinetics of Ceramic Systems Cements, Bio Ceramics and Refractories.

She completed her PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and had since then served as scientist with the CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), Jamshedpur rising to the level of Chief Scientist. During her tenure she has served as the Head of Corrosion & Surface Engineering; Analytical Chemistry; and Human Resources at CSIR-NML and has been Professor and Dean of Engineering Sciences with the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) for several years.
Dr Mishra has published more than 100 papers; has to her credit 13 patents; contributed 07 book chapters; transferred 02 technologies and handled around 25 sponsored projects as PI or Co-PI. Apart from this, she has several conference presentations and has delivered numerous invited lectures. She has guided 07 PhD students (03 completed, 01 submitted and 03 ongoing) and also a large number of students for their graduate and post-graduate dissertations. She has also been a member of the International Editorial Board of the IIM-Universities Press.
In recognition to her scientific contribution, Dr Mishra was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences of India in 2018; awarded the Best Metallurgist of the Year Award by Ministry of Mines, Government of India in 2012; bestowed with the Vasvik Award in women category in 2004; elected as Fellow of the Indian Institute of Ceramics in 2007; received the MRSI Medal in 2004; awarded the CSIR Raman Fellowship in 2002 and the CSIR Young Scientist Award in Engineering Sciences in 1999, to name a few. She was also recipient of the University Gold Medal of Ranchi University in 1985 for ranking 1st class first in the batch.

Mr Brijender Singh, Chief Refractories (Steel & Mills), Tata Steel Ltd, did his B Tech in Ceramic Engineering from IIT-BHU, Varanasi in 1989. In the same year, he joined Tata Steel as an Assistant Engineer in Refractory Maintenance Department. During initial period of his career in Tata Steel, he worked with important projects like installation of Blast Furnaces, Steel Melting Shops and Slab Reheating Furnaces. Later, he worked as Refractory Maintenance Engineer in Iron Making and Steel Making areas and brought about many improvements in Torpedo Ladles, Steel Ladles, LD Converters, RH degasser, etc.
During his tenure of 29 years in Tata Steel, he had worked in various capacities before getting promoted to the current position of Chief, Refractories (Steel & Mills) in 2014. Under his guidance, various design modifications were made in Lime Calcining Kilns, Continuous Casting Refractories, Ladles, Tundishes and Reheating furnaces, etc.

Mr Sitendu Mandal, Chief Scientist & Head, Specialty Glass Division and Project Planning and Business Development Division as also In-charge, Publicity and Public Interface Cell, CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata, obtained his MSc degree from Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal with specialization in Inorganic Chemistry. During his tenure of 31 years at CSIR-CGCRI, he played a very key role in research and developmental work in the field of glass science & technology, especially in the areas of optical glass technology, specialty optical glass, ultra low expansion glass-ceramics, low expansion ceramics, etc. His current research activities are in the areas of high density radiation shielding window (RSW) glass for radiation protection in nuclear hot cell and specialty borosilicate glass frit / bead for nuclear waste immobilization wherein technology development and commercialization have been the main focus. While the radiation shielding window glass is being produced in pilot scale at CGCRI for catering to the need of DAE, the technology of specialty glass beads has been successfully transferred to an industrial partner for commercial production and supply to DAE’s units. He is the key person for indigenous production of RSW glass and borosilicate glass bead for nuclear waste immobilization in our country. He has taken an ambitious target to produce RSW glass in specialty refractory crucible instead of platinum crucible for DAE.

The activities of Mr Mandal resulted in development of appropriate technology, development of product (strategic material), generation of knowledge base in the form of technical papers, patents, reports etc. He has published 15 papers in national and international journals and conference proceedings and filed 4 patents in India. He has also prepared more than 15 reports / documents for restricted circulation and delivered more than 12 invited lectures in several national and international conferences, workshops, etc.

Mr Mandal is the recipient of several prestigious awards, viz. CSIR Technology Award-2018 under the category ‘Innovation’, SKOCH Order of Merit Award 2017 for top 30 Skoch Transformational Innovation Projects in India, “Certificate of Merit” CSIR Technology Award for Innovation 2017, Best Technology Award for the three successive years (2013, 2014 and 2015) given by CSIR-CGCRI, NRDC Meritorious Innovation Award 2013, Malaviya Award 2004 given by the Indian Ceramic Society, CSIR-DAAD Scholarship for 16 months for the block year 1994-95, and many more.

Dr Atiar Rahaman Molla is presently working as a Principal Scientist at the CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata where he started his research career as a Junior Scientist in 2001. He is an Associate Professor of the Engineering Faculty of the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research. He obtained his B.Tech. in Ceramic Technology from the University of Calcutta and M.Tech. in Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur prior to obtaining his PhD in Engineering from the Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Professor Parag Bhargava graduated with a B. Tech (Metallurgical Engineering) from IIT-Bombay in 1991 and a Ph.D. (Materials Science) from University of Alabama in 1996 respectively. He carried out post-doctoral research at Rutgers University.

Mr Kali Charan Singh is retired Principal Technical Officer at the CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Khurja Center, U.P. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Ceramics, Kolkata. He has been involved in the Research & Development of clay Ceramics bodies at CGCRI, since 1983.

Prior to this he has been the Professor and Founding Head, Department of Materials Science (1990-2014), Coordinator, UGC Centre for Advanced Studies in Materials Science, Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology (2006-2012), Sardar Patel University, Coordinator, SICART, Gujarat; Sr. Scientist and Assistant Director, at CSIR-NPL (1978-1990), New Delhi. He is Elected Academician, World Academy of Ceramics. He has been member on various academic bodies of several Universities and apex committees of UGC and DRDO. He obtained his Ph.D. in Science in 1976 from Delhi University for his work on Development and Characterization of carbon Fibers while at NPL. His first Post Doctoral was at Institut Chemische Technik, University of Karlsruhe Germany during 1977-78 as Alexander von Humboldt Fellow wherein he worked on Development of Carbon-Carbon composites. Later on he had JSPS Fellowship at Tokyo Institute of Technology during 1985-86, Foreign Professor at TIT during 1998, UNIDO Expert to S.Korea in 1991, NSF visits to Clemson University since 2003 and so on. He has undertaken many National as well as International projects with USA, Germany, France, Japan, Korea and Russia in the area of Advanced Carbon materials and composites. He has been member on the DRDO Working Task Team for Development of Advanced Carbon/Carbon composites and related materials under chairmanship of Dr.A.P.J. Abdulkalam. He developed many technologies for solid and porous carbon materials, ceramics and composites for Defence, Aerospace and Nuclear applications. He has 4 patents to his credit and has published more than 150 research papers in International journals, Three chapters in Encyclopedia of Materials and four books. His main Research & Development interests had been in the field of Carbon fibers and carbon-carbon and Carbon-Ceramic composites; Processing, Structure, properties relationship and Development of carbon nanomaterials. He is on the advisory board of several National/International organization. Prior to this, he has been the Professor of Materials Science, Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology, Sardar Patel University, Gujarat and a senior Scientist at National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. He is Elected Academician, World Academy of Ceramics and recipient of bridge Building Award of American Ceramics Society, Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, JSPS Fellowship, Foreign Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology, UNIDO expert to South Korea and so on. Professor Dibakar Das is currently a Professor and Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences and Technology (SEST) at the University of Hyderabad. He obtained Ph.D. from IIT Bombay in 2004. Dr. Das carried out a significant part of his thesis work in the University of Colorado at Boulder and National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) Boulder, USA. Following Ph. D., he joined the University Of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in 2004. After three and half years of postdoctoral research in the University of Cincinnati he joined Sinmat Inc. in Gainesville, Florida, USA, as a Senior Scientist, in 2007. Serving Sinmat for about 2 years he joined the School of Engineering Sciences and Technology (SEST) at the University of Hyderabad in 2009 August. Dr Das is a visiting Professor in the Unit of Dynamics and Structure of Molecular Materials, University of the Coast of Opal Coast (ULCO), Calais, France. He is the recipient of prestigious MOPGA fellowship from Republic of France. Dr. Das is an elected fellow of the Indian Institute of Ceramics (IIC) and Telangana Academy of Sciences (TAS). His work on chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) won 2008 R&D 100 award for invention on CMP Slurry for Polishing Wide Band Gap Semiconductors and 2009 Frost & Sullivan North American Excellence in Research of the Year Award in the field of advanced semiconductor surface modification. He has published more than 100 peer reviewed articles in journals and conference proceedings of international repute. Professor (Dr) T. S. Sampath Kumar is Head of Medical Materials Laboratory, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He received his Ph.D. in materials engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1986. His current research areas are nanostructured implants, multifuctional bioceramic nanocarriers, injectable bone cements, electrospun 3D scaffolds and value added bioceramics from eggshell waste.

He is a Fellow of the Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs India and of International Medical Sciences Academy. He recently received ASM-IIM Visiting Lecture Award 2017, Reviewer Excellence 2018 of Mat. Sci. Engg. C and Bulletien of Materials Science journals. His research guidance is marked by many best thesis awards, journal best paper awards and best presentation and project awards. He has well over 125 publications with 3291 citations and h-index of 32. He co-authored a book “Biomaterials: A Nano Approach”, 4 book chapters and edited 4 conference proceedings in journals.
