It was under his able leadership that the electron microscopy facility at DMRL developed to international standards. Later, he became the leader of a project for the ‘Development of Specialty Steels for Naval Applications’. The team led by him developed various steel products for use in the Warship construction for Indian Navy. Thanks to their efforts, Indian Navy need not import any steel for Warship construction. The range of products indigenised are wide plates, bulb-bars, weld consumables, forgings castings etc. in the two Steels christened DMR-249A and DMR-249B having YS at 390MPa and 580MPa, respectively. The country’s first Aircraft Carrier, INS Vikrant II, commissioned recently was built by these steels.
Dr Muraleedharan was also the HRD Coordinator of DMRL during 2005-06 and subsequently headed the Materials Management Division (2010). He has also been the member of DRDO Think tank during 2003-2005. Prof.
Bikramjit Basu has
been serving on the faculty of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore since
2011. He is currently a full Professor at Materials Research Center with joint
appointment at Center for BioSystems Science and Engineering. After doing PhD
from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium; he was on the faculty of Indian Institute
of Technology Kanpur during 2001-2011. His research is published
over 250 research papers (citation ~ 8,900/ H-index: 50). He is an elected
fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Science,
India; National Academy of Medical Sciences, Institute of American Institute
for Medical and Biological Engineering and Institute of Materials, Minerals
& Mining (UK).He is one of the youngest recipients from the
Metallurgy/Materials Science community as well as the only Biomaterial
Scientist in the complete history of India’s most coveted science award, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (2013).He remains the only Indian from India to receive the prestigious ‘Coble Award for Young Scholars’ (2008)
from the American Ceramic Society.
Bikramjit’s current research
integrates biomaterials and bioengineering approaches to address human
healthcare issues. Employing quantitative experiments together with
computational and pre-clinical studies, his laboratory has developed new
multifunctional biomaterials (‘Piezobiocomposites’ with bone-mimicking
functional properties), new processing approach (spark plasma sintering or 3D
inkjet powder printing) and new concepts (intermittent delivery of
electrical/magnetic stimulation, in vitro) to understand biophysical
stimulation mediated modulation of cell functionality. His seminal findings
include engineering of microstructure at multiple length scales to develop a
broad range of biocomposites (Sr.-doped glass ceramics, HA-BaTiO3) with
reliable fracture resistance properties and uncompromised biocompatibility.
He is currently leading India’s largest Translational
Center of Excellence on biomaterials for orthopaedic and dental applications,
with an interdisciplinary team of 50 researchers, clinicians and companies. His
research group invented new manufacturing processes for patient-specific
ceramic femoral heads and polymer-ceramic acetabular sockets for total hip
joint replacement surgery as well as three-piece dental implant system with
pentagonal anti-rotational features.
